Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The 2021 liberalisation of the Cuban economy is an opportune moment for the revitalisation of economic relations between Botswana and the Caribbean island.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was said by Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Kabo Morwaeng during a meeting with the visiting Cuba deputy foreign minister Mr Elio Eduardo Rodriguuz Perdomo in Gaborone yesterday.<\/p>\n

He said revitalisation of relations also offered a good opportunity to validate and resuscitate cooperation discussions in the areas of tourism and hospitality, cultural exchange programmes and establishment of a high performance sports academy in Botswana.<\/p>\n

Mr Morwaeng said revitalised bilateral cooperation should extend to previously untapped areas such as trade and investment.<\/p>\n

He called on the deputy minister to continue working closely with Botswana on identifying new possible areas to strengthen cooperation between the two countries as well as within the SADC region.<\/p>\n

The minister expressed Botswana\u2019s strong desire to continue strengthening relations with Cuba pointing out that the two countries had enjoyed excellent bilateral cooperation at national and multilateral level since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1977.<\/p>\n

Mr Morwaeng said cooperation in the health sector remained strong as evidenced mainly by secondment of Cuban doctors to Botswana.<\/p>\n

Currently there were 80 Cuban health professionals providing service in Botswana, he said.<\/p>\n

Minister Morwaeng reaffirmed Botswana\u2019s solidarity with Cuba regarding the US imposed sanctions on the country.<\/p>\n

Botswana-Cuba relations remained strong with Botswana supporting the lifting of the embargo against the island, he said.<\/p>\n

Responding, Mr Perdomo said Cuba was looking forward to strengthening and enhancing relations with Botswana<\/p>\n

He said Cuba\u2019s strength was more in the human resources area as the country had invested heavily in training its people.<\/p>\n

Mr Perdomo disclosed Cuba\u2019s plans to increase cooperation in the area of health as well as exploring other possibilities in agriculture, tourism and sports.<\/p>\n

Cuba, he said, would keep on growing and cementing its relations with Botswana.<\/p>\n
