Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Botswana believes a participatory democratic system should comprise strong and functional institutions with people at the epicentre of such structures\u2019 formation and functionality.<\/b><\/p>\n

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi said this during a virtual summit for democracy yesterday emphasising that participation in a democratic system ensured that primary shareholders, in particular the people, were at the epicentre of the formation and functionality of their governance structures and shaping their own future.<\/p>\n

He said Botswana\u2019s strong economic growth and shared prosperity had been shaped by a well-founded belief in a strong, functional and a more inclusive participatory democracy.<\/p>\n

The President urged other leaders to strengthen commitment to advancing global democracy in order to secure a foundation for greater human progress.<\/p>\n

Noting that Botswana and the National Democratic Institute together with other partners hosted a summit on Constitutionalism and Democratic Consolidation in Africa last July, Dr Masisi said key outcomes of the Gaborone Declaration was acknowledgement of African citizens\u2019 support for constitutionalism and presidential term limits.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our earnest hope that the widespread circulation and signing of the Declaration of Principles will secure prosperous democratic future for our continent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Co-hosted by leaders from the United States, Costa Rica, The Netherlands, Korea and Zambia, yesterday\u2019s summit discussed a variety of views on how democracy delivered economic growth and shared prosperity.<\/p>\n

Discussions covered the importance of democracy and how democratic systems can overcome impediments so as to unleash human potential, uphold human dignity and deliver security and prosperity.<\/p>\n

It was held under the theme: Democracy Delivering Economic Growth and Shared Prosperity.<\/p>\n
