Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Any assistance aimed at improving academic performance is commendable and deserves recognition. <\/b><\/p>\n

This was said by Letlhakeng sub-region chief education officer, Mr Gagoope Andreck at the closing ceremony of the academic study camp recently.<\/p>\n

Mr Andreck applauded volunteers who initiated an academic study camp for Mphuthe Junior Secondary School learners in Letlhakeng for their good gesture.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe study camp comes at the right time when the school performance has been very low and this will go a long way in helping learners acquire necessary skills to pass their exams,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that the camp which, ran from April 11-21 had been a success based on the number of learners which was over 120.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis cannot be taken lightly as the coordinators used their own resources to make sure the study camp becomes a success. Instilling discipline among learners remains key in their life as that will help mould them to be what they want to be in life,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

He also indicated that learners enjoyed the camp as they were engaged and received feedback on the exercises they were given.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the coordinators have done is in line with the Reset Agenda that calls for change in the way we do things. I believe through this initiative which I wish it can be done as many times as possible, the school will be able to reclaim its rightful position,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He therefore encourage learners to ensure that they spent time reading different books to acquire knowledge and get ahead of others by dedicating their time to reading through which they would excel in everything they did.<\/p>\n

For her part, the study camp coordinator, Ms Oreeditse Maeletso said the initiative intended to reach out to all learners in the Letlhakeng District with the aim for enrichment, remediation and collaborative learning to improve performance.<\/p>\n

Ms Maeletso said another objective was to equip learners with study skills suitable and acceptable to their standards of learning.<\/p>\n

Ms Maeletso, who is an English teacher at Lehutshelo JSS in Hukuntsi, said even though the study camp almost failed they were happy that they managed to pull it off and it had been a success.<\/p>\n

She added that as coordinators, they were however saddened by the large number of learners who failed their examinations and ended up on the streets. Thus, she urged fellow teachers to be closer to their learners as they had identified some gaps in their needs and support.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou should keep track of learners\u2019 performance and let them account for it. Parents should also check their children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n

There will be no good performance without discipline,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, Ms Maeletso said she was happy about progress they had made and believed that learners had grasped skills and what was expected of them especially that they were shown how the exam was marked.<\/p>\n

Some learners\u2019 representatives, Portia Bogosing and Desmond Andreck said they were happy with the study camp and had learned a lot during their participation and acquired the necessary skills for them to pass the exams and were looking forward to the next camp. Mphuthe JSS school head, Mr Montshi Maifala also thanked the study camp coordinators, saying they showed that they cared and supported children\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe initiative deserves a round of applause as it is meant to shape a better future for learners,\u201d Mr Maifala said.<\/p>\n

He also thanked parents for their support as well as learners who attended the camp every day to make sure they learned and equipped themselves for the coming examinations.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe this will surely turn around their performance for the better especially that the intention is for all learners to get at least 27 points and above,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He therefore implored learners to remain committed to their studies and ensure that they achieved their desired targets.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, other study camp coordinators included Ms Kealeboga Keitaile, an English teacher at Popagano JSS in Sepopa, Mr Onkagetse Maeletso, Science teacher at Molongwa JSS in Khakhea, Mr Tidimalo Maeletso, Design and Technology teacher at Lehutshelo JSS in Hukuntsi, Mr Puso Kaisara, Mathematics teacher at Ditshegwane JSS, Ms Solofelang Rantswaneng, Social Studies temporary teacher at Mphuthe JSS, Ms Messiah Ramaeba, Setswana teacher at Gaborone West JSS as well as Reverend Isaac Kabasia, retired Social Studies teacher.<\/p>\n
