Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) has closed more than 10 cases involving former President Lt Gen Ian Khama, his brothers Tshekedi and Anthony Khama, Minister Eric Molale, former minister Unity Dow and Sebina brothers Kegone and Tshepo citing insufficient evidence.<\/p>\n

DCEC spokesperson Lentswe Motshoganetsi has confirmed that some investigation files have been closed by the DCEC in line with routine practice.<\/p>\n

Motshoganetsi however would not disclose the identities behind the case dockets.\u201cI can confirm that some Investigation files have been closed by the DCEC as this practice is routine. Information on matters that have been closed is confidential and therefore, not for the public. There are reasons for closing such matters; some matters were closed due to death of the suspect (the person being investigated), insufficient evidence, and death of key witnesses in some matters,\u201d said Motshoganetsi.<\/p>\n

He further explained that even though the mandate of the DCEC is specifically to investigate and forward matters to the DPP for their consideration, the DCEC has an interest in ensuring that the cases are actionable. He said the state was losing a lot of money through prosecuting suspected corruption cases with insufficient evidence, the DCEC also invests a lot of resources (time, funds, and manpower) in investigating such matters.<\/p>\n
