Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The University of Botswana (UB) and its staff unions have agreed on an eight per cent salary adjustment effective last month.<\/b><\/p>\n

The salary agreement between UB, UB Academic and Support Staff Union (UBASSU) and UB Staff Union (UBSU) was signed on Tuesday after two strikes by the staff, one in November last year and the other in February.<\/p>\n

Addressing the media, acting vice chancellor, Mr David Katzke thanked both unions for resolving the matter.<\/p>\n

He said the agreement was for the benefit of the students, as their future depended on their studies.<\/p>\n

\u201c… This shows that we are here to work together and take the university to greater heights,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

UBSU president, Mr Gadzani Mhotsha expressed gratitude for the open and frank engagements with UB management which culminated in the agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe started the negotiations at 15, then 10 and nine per cent and finally UB management offered us an eight per cent salary increment, he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Mhotsha said lessons learnt from the protracted negotiations included the impact of the strike on students\u2019 examinations.<\/p>\n

He said the salary inrement would improve their pensions, which had been stagnant for sometime.<\/p>\n

The UBSU leader revealed that talks on the fate of employees whose salaries were withheld during the strike were ongoing.<\/p>\n
