Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Travelers intending to cross between Botswana and Namibia using identity cards (IDs) have been advised to ensure that validity period of their IDs is over three months.<\/b><\/p>\n

The advice was issued by acting officer-in-charge at Mamuno border gate, Mr Elijah Makabe in an interviewer recently.<\/p>\n

He said the Memorandum of Agreement permitting citizens of Botswana and Namibia to use IDs to cross their borders stipulated that the validity period of the identity card should be more than three months.<\/p>\n

He therefore said those in possession of IDs with validity period of less than three months could not be allowed to cross the border unless they used passports.<\/p>\n

\u201cTravelers with identity cards expiring within the next three months and did not bring their passports along are turned back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Makabe said combination of valid passport and birth certificate was still a requirement for children under the age sixteen to cross the border, alongside affidavit confirming that the absent parent had given permission for the child to travel.<\/p>\n

In case the child or minor is travelling with the guardian not the parent, he said affidavit confirming both parents permission for the child to travel would be required and only affidavits of parents appearing on the birth certificate were required.<\/p>\n

Mr Makabe said following Memorandum of agreement permitting citizens of Botswana and Namibia to use identity cards, some by travelers as far as Mochudi had to be turned back as they did not produce passport for minors accompanying them.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, he said following the launch of Mamuno border post 24 hour operations on April 1, the border staff complement has been increased and are operating in three shifts.<\/p>\n
