Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Botswana is set to commemorate the World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTISD) in Ramotswa next Wednesday.<\/b><\/p>\n

The event, which will be held at Ramotswa showground, will be officiated by the Minister of Communications, Knowledge and Technology Mr Thulagano Segokgo.<\/p>\n

In an interview on the side-lines of preparatory meetings this week Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA) Corporate Communications Deputy Director, Ms Mpho Moletsane said this year\u2019s<\/p>\n

WTISD commemorations would be held under the theme: Empowering the Least Developed Countries Through Information and Communication Technologies.<\/p>\n

She said preceding the WTISD was the Girls in ICT Day event today at the Emmanuel Hall in Ramotswa.<\/p>\n

The event is commemorated annually to create awareness and encourage girls and young women to pursue careers and studies in Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).<\/p>\n

Ms Moletsane reiterated the concern that ICT sector had over the years been dominated by males globally with Botswana being no exception.<\/p>\n

She said they were impressed by efforts aimed at bridging the gap, adding that the Girls in ICT commemorations was part of the efforts to increase and advocate for comprehensive knowledge and resources to equip the girl-child with skills to explore the digital world.She said the day was usually commemorated on the last Thursday of April but they decided to push it closer to the world telecommunications celebrations.<\/p>\n

The day would be celebrated under the theme: Digital Skills for Life, an inspiration to girls to pursue a future in ICTs and empower them by ensuring they have necessary skills, confidence and support to achieve their goals.<\/p>\n

Ms Moletsane said the past week they organised training for different groups such as out of school youth, farmers and small entrepreneurs on basic ICT skills.<\/p>\n

She pleaded with Batswana to tap into the ICT value chain as it had potential of driving sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n

Ms Moletsane encouraged young girls to harness the power of technology which could determine and change their career paths.<\/p>\n

She said through various stakeholders and partners they would give back to the community either through the Kgotla, schools or health facilities following a detailed needs assessment report.<\/p>\n

WTISD has been commemorated globally since 1969 and in Botswana since 2002.<\/p>\n
