Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Districts councils must ensure that quality developments and services are offered to members of the public timeously and within budget, Francistown Deputy Mayor, Mr Lesego Kwambala has said.<\/b><\/p>\n

Addressing a North East District Council (NEDC) retreat in Francistown Wednesday, Mr Kwambala emphasised that the main duty of councillors should be delivering services to people as opposed to individual preferences which delayed service delivery.<\/p>\n

Mr Kwambala observed that politicians had the tendency of stalling developments by their personal differences.<\/p>\n

This, he said, resulted in them working against each other instead of working as a team for the benefit of the people.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce given an opportunity to lead, you should lead with focus,\u201d said Mr Kwambala ,further advising councillors to desist from blaming leadership instead of leading by example as it was their responsibility to know how to develop electorates.<\/p>\n

He said unemployment was a concern particularly amongst young people as some of them ended up joining Ipelegeng, a programme that was originally designed for elderly.<\/p>\n

He urged councillors to engage and come up with measures to give the youth direction and to come up with ideas that could empower them. NEDC chairperson, Mr Kudzani Tobokwani was however happy that projects in his region were completed well on time with quality not being compromised.<\/p>\n

He warned councillors to avoid corruption as it had the potential to collapse the economy.<\/p>\n

Mr Tobokwani further advised the councillors to engage in intensive inspection of projects instead of waiting for full council meetings before reporting malfunctions. Monitoring projects, he said, would help to ensure that quality and durable infrastructures were built.<\/p>\n

NEDC secretary, Mr Lebuile Israel said there were a lot of skilled youth who were unemployed in the society whose skills needed to be utilised.<\/p>\n

He said council was considering hiring freshly graduated artisans to build and head projects within their constituencies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is because they will do their level best to please the community they live in.\u201d<\/p>\n
