Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Government is committed to continuously improving quality and conditions of service of the teaching profession.<\/b><\/p>\n

Minister for State President, Mr Kabo Morwaeng said this at the National Teachers\u2019 Day celebration in Francistown on Friday. The teachers\u2019 day celebration was themed: Teach Today, Touch Lives Forever.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a government, we will continue to equitably allocate resources in line with our national aspirations as guided by our national vision and the development plans as well as the regional and global standards of the teaching profession,\u201d said Mr Morwaeng.<\/p>\n

Similarly, the minister said in an effort to improve the status of the teaching profession, government would continue to ensure that teachers had access to continuous professional development to sharpen their skills and competencies to be able to deal with the ever changing needs of the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

Also, he said government would continue to do its best to provide teachers with necessary resources to help learners with relevant skills and competencies that could enable them to successfully compete with others at a global level.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a government, we will do so by continuously investing in our learning infrastructure, with particular reference to increasing the use of ICT in education. Government has already started the process through the SmartBots and the school connectivity and digitization Initiatives,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Mr Morwaeng thanked teachers for helping the country\u2019s education system to recover from COVID-19 crisis.<\/p>\n

He said providing equitable and inclusive quality education for all during the pandemic was a mammoth task.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe learnt from COVID 19 crisis that it is impossible to achieve our aspiration of becoming a knowledge based economy without teachers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the celebration saw 116 teachers receiving awards in four categories that included long and distinguished award, meritorious service, silver jubilee and mid-career medals.<\/p>\n

Mr Morwaeng applauded the recipients for their selfless service and growth of Botswana\u2019s economy, saying \u2018we are proud of the impeccable job you are doing.\u2019 For his part, Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe said the ministry wanted to celebrate teachers\u2019 achievements and selfless contribution to the development of education in Botswana with the prestigious awards.<\/p>\n

Through the awards, he said they did not only recognise teachers who excelled academically but also those who contributed socially by improving the quality of life of the community they served.<\/p>\n

He said the awards were also meant to reaffirm the ministry\u2019s commitment to continuously improve the quality and conditions of teachers across all level of education in Botswana.<\/p>\n

Further, the minister appreciated the level of commitment shown by teachers in their contribution towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on inclusive and equitable quality education, not only in Botswana but globally.<\/p>\n
