Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Africa must never shy away from the principles of self-determination, freedom and political independence as these remain the cornerstones of the union and key components for development.<\/b><\/p>\n

This was said by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Lemogang Kwape, at an event to mark 60 years since the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity, which later transformed into the African Union.<\/p>\n

Dr Kwape said as such, Africa must continue to support and stand in solidarity with the people of Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic and call for their political emancipation through the African Union, the United Nations and other relevant bodies.<\/p>\n

He said the AU had made tangible triumphs in the past 60 years through the wisdom and sacrifices made by former statesmen, who deliberated and came up with ideas and collective solutions, with the key aim of securing a bright future for Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe you will all agree with me, that these tangible triumphs could not have been possible without the sacrifices and wisdom of the founders of the AU, who left a formidable legacy in the fight for the economic and political emancipation of Africa,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He added that it was through this collective effort that Africa would achieve the common vision of Agenda 2063 and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is indeed an opportune moment for us to also reflect on the Union\u2019s transformation over the years, its shortcomings and successes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must also determine the extent to which we have lived up to the African Union values.\u201d<\/p>\n

He reiterated Botswana\u2019s confidence in the mandate of the AU and its commitment to the blueprint Vision of Agenda 2063, thus encouraged the nation to continue to take advantage of the opportunities provided by previous generations to realise an integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa.<\/p>\n

Dr Kwape said the unconstitutional changes of government, re-emergence of coups d\u2019e\u0301tats, perennial challenge of conflicts in several hotspots on the continent were a stumbling block to the attainment of Agenda 2063 goals, especially AU\u2019s efforts of silencing the guns by 2030.<\/p>\n

Despite all the challenges that Africa faced, Dr Kwape said, the union continued to make commendable strides for the betterment of lives of all Africans.<\/p>\n

The establishment of African Continent Free Trade Area (AfCTA) , he said, would when fully implemented greatly improve intra-African trade, enhance industrialisation, and strengthen continental and regional value chains.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith huge import bills amongst member states, Africa must fully utilise the AfCTA in collectively pursuing economic growth and development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
