Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) has congratulated voters in Mmaphula East for exercising their constitutional right to choose their representative at the just ended by-election in the Mmaphula East Ward, Palapye.<\/b><\/p>\n

The party\u2019s spokesperson Mpho Pheko said judging by the election\u2019s outcome, \u201cwe have no doubt that Batswana are warming up to our message and are steadily continuing to entrust our party with their votes,\u201d she said. This will, Mpho said, with time allow \u201cus to take over state power and deliver a better Botswana for all.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are heartened by the large and heartwarming numbers that voted the BCP in spite of the toxic environment that the Party and its candidate Gaolathe Kenosi found itself in from its detractors,\u201d said Mpho. She added that: \u201cWe got into the race to win but all is not lost as our numbers reflect. The outcome is clear; an overwhelming number of Batswana are tired of BDP misrule and want change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because of this, Pheko said, the BCP commits itself as a viable alternative to the BDP and UDC. The BCP stands for authentic regime change, anchored on demonstrable respect for good governance and democracy, she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe understand there are no shortcuts to attaining our mission \u2013 the by-elections are a good barometer for us as we prepare for 2024. So far so good. We believe we are well placed for 2024,\u201d said Pheko.<\/p>\n

She called on their members not to be disheartened but be emboldened to redouble their efforts and work for BCP victory in 2024.\u201cWe are determined to demonstrate that democracy is worth fighting and dying for. To our loyal members \u2018Baswela Tumelo\u2019 we say, \u201c Ntwa e bolotse. Phuthang mesobana and defend the values that your Party has committed itself to.You are the flag bearers of democracy and good governance. We urge you to stay the course. Forward ever, backwards never! We shall finally prevail!\u201d said Pheko.<\/p>\n

She added that: \u201c Our loyal followers and activists must take heart from the fact that the trend, since 1984 shows that bye elections victory is never mirrored in National Elections \u2013 it is a mirage!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the record, the BCP is not prepared to surrender to an emerging combo that threatens to take Botswana to the dark days of dictatorship and the dreaded extra judicial killings, whose masterminds now portray themselves as heroes of democracy, a virtue they never promoted when entrusted with state power. Never again, Batswana Betsho!,\u201d said Pheko. She further stated that \u201cLastly, we congratulate the UDC for its win.\u201d<\/p>\n
