Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Leadwood Limousins stud have won Grand Champion of the yard at the maiden Future Genetics Agriculture Show and Auction held in Kgagodi on July 7.<\/b><\/p>\n

Held under the theme: Superior Genetics, Gateway to Sustainable Food Security, the show was organised by Future Genetics Association.<\/p>\n

Leadwood Limousin stud representative, Mr Gilluuume Wolvaartdt told that the prize came as a surprise because there was stiff competition from other breeds brought in by local upcoming farmers.<\/p>\n

\u201cLimousin bulls are the bulls of choice when cross breeding with local indigenous breeds such as Brahman, Beef Master and Bonsmara,\u201d Mr Wolvaartdt said.<\/p>\n

He said though Limousins were originally from France, they adapted well to diverse climates and conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Leadwood Limousins we successfully breed them in the Tuli-Block and Sandveld areas,\u201d stated Mr Wolvaartdt.<\/p>\n

Leadwood Limousins stud also walked away with the Grand Champion Female.<\/p>\n

In the small stock category, TS2 Dorpers and Rima Boer goats scooped the Grand champion Ram and Grand Champion Doe respectively.<\/p>\n

Mr Ealotse Reikeletseng of Rima Boer goats near Tshimoyapula was elated with the prize and said, he did his best to prepare for the show.<\/p>\n

He urged other farmers to attend agriculture shows and exchange ideas with seasoned farmers on how to improve their stock.<\/p>\n

He said it took a lot of work to produce quality breeds.<\/p>\n

Mr Bapati Sethamo of TS2 Dorpers also said that he put a lot of effort to improve his stock.<\/p>\n

Located at Botepetepe area near Serowe, Mr Sethamo said TS2 Dorpers produced animals of high quality and urged farmers to buy from him so that they could improve their stock.<\/p>\n

He expressed gratitude to government for taking the initiative to improve both cattle and small stock sectors, to turn the country into the best meat producer.<\/p>\n

Future Genetics chairperson, Mr Rex Mothobi said the show attracted 140 cattle and 142 small stock.<\/p>\n

He said Future Genetics was made up of farmers from Bobirwa, Tuli block, Kgagodi, Serowe, Mahalapye and other areas in the Central District after realising that working as individual farmers would not benefit them.<\/p>\n

He said the farmers also realised that they had been participating in other shows organised outside the district hence decided to organise their own show, where they could exchange ideas and improve their breeds.<\/p>\n
