Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>As people plan to take trips to different destinations ahead of the President’s holidays, Botswana Police Service (BPS) has warned the public against hitch-hiking.<\/b><\/p>\n

In an interview, No:16 district traffic officer, Superintendent, Tuelo Komanyane, said they have observed a growing trend of hitch-hikers being subjected to dangerous life threatening incidents in private vehicles, and he explained that is why they are pleading with travellers to use public transport.<\/p>\n

“It must be emphasized that hitch-hiking is not safe for anyone. We have in the past had reports of people who were robbed, sexually abused by strangers they had asked for lifts from,” Komanyane said.<\/p>\n

Komanyane further pleaded with motorists to exercise caution when driving to their destinations. He stated that it is during holidays such as this that they experience mishaps like fatal road accidents and theft.<\/p>\n

“However, we are more than prepared on our roads to respond to any situation and travellers should expect road blocks, stop and search in all of our main roads. Drivers should avoid drunken driving, speeding and unnecessary overtaking, ” he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Komanyane has also pleaded with farmers to keep their livestock away from the A1 highway, because some of the accidents along the A1 highway and other roads are caused by livestock.<\/p>\n
