Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Government is resolute to establish a footprint in quality animal breed genetics and increase the national livestock herd, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi said during a courtesy call by America-based ST Genetic Business Development vice president, Dr Prakash Kalarickal on August 3.<\/b><\/p>\n

He highlighted that the courtesy call was in line with the initiative to establish a semen sorting facility in Botswana, adding that the country was keen on attaining every aspect of a knowledge-based economy with interest on exploring ways of improving livestock genetics.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is government\u2019s intention to avail superior animal breeds to increase the national herd and its genetic merits, hence we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Texas-based research entities to establish collaborative initiatives for improved agricultural and natural resource sectors,\u201d President Masisi said.<\/p>\n

Dr Masisi said his team had, in its recent trip to Texas, met with management of ST Genetics, thus he was confident that the MoU between the two parties would yield positive results. He further expressed optimism that Dr Kalarickal\u2019s visit would kick-start some of the agreements in the MoU.<\/p>\n

In response, Dr Kalarickal, who is here at the invite of the National Agricultural Research and Development Institute, vowed to explore possible ways that could be beneficial to the advancement of the country\u2019s agricultural sector with specific interest on increasing cattle production.<\/p>\n
