Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Seventeen students have been enrolled under the Out of School Education Training (OSET) programme in the North East Region, principal adult education officer, Ms Rebecca Diane has said.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking during the OSET prize giving ceremony to celebrate OSET progress and awarding its best performing students in Ditladi recently, Ms Diane said some of the students enrolled under OSET were those who were unable to complete their education due to lack of financial resources.<\/p>\n

She said some of the adults attending OSET programme were those that were denied the opportunity to attend school.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of our students enrolled under OSET without even knowing how to read or write and as the ministry responsible for education, we are driven on pushing the literacy rate in Botswana, which is now sitting at 82.6 per cent,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Ms Diane further said they wanted to celebrate their students, looking at their accomplishments.<\/p>\n

Another speaker, principal adult education officer, Mr Mothusiemang Selemane said apart from offering Adult Basic Education Programme, Out of School Education for Children and Vocational Skills Training andOSET also helped students sit for Primary School Leaving Exams.<\/p>\n

Acting regional director for North East, Mr Gaobotse Mokomane said lack of literacy amongst people limited betterment of the society.<\/p>\n

He urged people to utilise free education OSET offered, which could ensure that communities were educated and thus break the cycle of poverty.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomeone who doesn\u2019t know how to read and write becomes a prisoner in their own life. When educated you can be able to live in almost every country in the world, without failing to fit in\u201d, said Mr Mokomane.<\/p>\n

One of the students, Ms Boitumelo Motlhagodi said she enrolled for OSET in 2011 programme without knowing how to read and write.<\/p>\n

She encouraged all who had not had a chance to go to school to enrol with OSET.<\/p>\n

She explained that OSET also benefitted her with skills such as farming and creating artefacts of which now put money on the table.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, first prize winners in each category walked away with P300, second prize P200 and third prize P100.<\/p>\n
