Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Lesotho, Ntsokoane Matekane, defended this Thursday, in Luanda, the need for SADC leaders to maintain their commitment to good governance, with a view to the well-being of the populations.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 43rd Summit of Heads of State and Government of SADC, Ntsokoane Matekane, recalled that \u201cgovernments are elected to serve the people and not to serve themselves\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we hold office, we must serve the aspirations of the people with honesty and transparency\u201d, he expressed before representatives of the 16 Member States of the organization.<\/p>\n

In a reference to Lesotho, which recently held general elections, Ntsokoane Matekane said that in his country, like others in the region, voting freely in an election is a right as well as choosing leaders.<\/p>\n

It considered elections a principle for sustainable peace, stability and socio-economic development of each State.<\/p>\n

In the view of Ntsokoane Matekane, SADC has been a \u201ctrue friend\u201d for Lesotho for years, having highlighted the organization’s action in the stabilization process of his country, which experienced a period of political-military instability, in 2020.<\/p>\n

Within the framework of the Summit, Angola assumed this Thursday the rotating presidency of SADC, for a period of one year.<\/p>\n

Angola received, this Thursday, the testimony to lead the organization, until August 2024, replacing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).<\/p>\n

Headquartered in Gaborone (Botswana), one of SADC’s major objectives is to make the region industrialized by 2063, as set out in the organization’s Strategy and Roadmap, approved by the Heads of State and Government, in April 2015, for the period 2015 -2063.<\/p>\n

Created in August 1992, SADC is made up of Angola, South Africa Botswana, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eswatini, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
