Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Acting President, Mr Slumber Tsogwane has expressed concern about the backlog of maintenance of government buildings, most importantly schools.<\/b><\/p>\n

Addressing a kgotla meeting in Motopi on Thursday, Mr Tsogwane observed that funds meant for maintenance of schools were often returned to government coffers as they were not used during the scheduled financial year.<\/p>\n

Mr Tsogwane spoke against failure to use scheduled funds, saying this led to an unnecessary backlog that in turn delayed implementation of new developmental projects.<\/p>\n

He also indicated that vandalism by learners also contributed to the sad state of school buildings, saying this was due to ill-discipline among pupils.<\/p>\n

\u201cA dormitory was burnt to ashes in one of the schools in the country, and this was not an act of unknown criminals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease, let us discipline our children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Tsogwane was responding to remarks by the chairperson of Motopi village development committee, Mr Bathusi Kutoro who had expressed concern about the state of Motopi Junior Secondary School, saying the school hostels were dilapidated and ablution facilities did not have doors.<\/p>\n
