Save for a re-introduction of a few faces that had been out of favour like Thato Raphaka, Kabelo Ebineng and a few others, it is difficult to say what the noise was all about beyond the shifting of old furniture.<\/b><\/p>\n

The ministry of education was left untouched. This is disappointing but not surprising. Across government there is still a lack of grasp of just how a lot still depends on what happens at the Ministry of Education. That ministry has now become the sick old man of government. To fix the situation at that ministry, it will take a lot more than appointing a new Permanent Secretary or a new minister.<\/p>\n

Botswana\u2019s education is in a mess. There is first a need to understand not only the problems bedeviling the ministry, but also the scale of those problems. Beyond that, those in leadership, especially at the office of the president have to demonstrate an open mind towards fixing the Ministry of Education.<\/p>\n

Every year when school results come out there is a national outcry on the outcomes. That has become like a national ritual. After a week the noise goes silent. And life goes on, with the hope that next year\u2019s results will be better. But they never get better.<\/p>\n

The situation continues to deteriorate every year. In fact even from afar one cannot miss the depth of lethargy and disfunction plaguing Botswana\u2019s education. If government was serious about reinvigorating the public service as had been promised, a big chunk of that exercise should have been dedicated to the Ministry of education.<\/p>\n

As the moment the minister and permanent secretary seem lost. There is no guidance on policy. All thinking is short term and most of it done on a day to day basis. We need to work towards restoring the integrity of Botswana\u2019s education system. That will not even start to happen until we fully understand where we need to go and also where we derailed. We have to make Botswana\u2019s education system foolproof and bulletproof.<\/p>\n

As it is now, education has long ceased to be a leveler. Now education is responsible for further diving society and entrenching inequalities. Private education, which offers hope out of the morass in the public sector has become intolerably expensive. Only a few people can afford it for their children.<\/p>\n

It is a take it or leave it scenario. And it is for that reason that those with the means are paying for private education. The current state of Botswana\u2019s education has raised the stakes to unprecedented high levels. It has crated chaos across all levels of society. Too many illiterate kids roam the streets, they have dropped from the system and they are literally unemployable.<\/p>\n

To get the government back working we have to get the education correct. Education is the basis of everything in a modern society. The nation remains not only skeptical, but is also losing faith. Government should move swiftly, not only with appointing new faces, but actually fixing what needs to be fixed.<\/p>\n
