Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>In a significant development, the government has unveiled plans to grant a manganese mining license to the Giyani Metals Company, which has been diligently exploring the untapped manganese potential in the regions of Kanye, Kgwakgwe, and Otse. The forthcoming request for an operating license, expected to be submitted next month, marks a pivotal moment in the pursuit of manganese mining.<\/b><\/p>\n

Minister of Minerals and Energy, Lefoko Moagi, shed light on the diligent efforts of the Giyani Metals Company, which has been on-site since 2018, conducting extensive assessments of the manganese reserves. Moagi disclosed, \u201cThis company has been exploring, and after some time, they discovered that indeed what they are looking for could be it. They set up a plant in the area to establish whether the kind of manganese in the area could be used in electric car batteries, and I am delighted to announce that they have confirmed that the manganese in the area can be utilized in electric car batteries.\u201d<\/p>\n

The company has conducted a preliminary economic assessment to ascertain the value of this manganese deposit and its long-term viability. Moagi further revealed that the mining company has expressed its willingness to mine manganese on a substantial scale, projecting an impressive 57-year tenure for a production scale of 3 million tons.<\/p>\n

Moagi underscored that while the longest mining license in Botswana is typically granted for 25 years, it is renewable if the company seeks an extension, underscoring the substantial commitment of the potential investor.<\/p>\n

The Minister also pointed out that the company intends to explore additional deposits in Ramotswa and Lobatse, extending the reach of this transformative initiative.<\/p>\n

However, Moagi expressed concern over a recent increase in the number of residents in Kgwakgwe. He questioned whether these individuals had obtained permission from the land board to erect permanent structures, or if they had done so with the knowledge of an impending mining operation and the expectation of compensation for relocation. To address these issues, the government is planning to engage with the land board to ensure that land allocations are made in a compliant manner.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Moagi highlighted the substantial economic benefits of the project, including job creation and a boost to local businesses. A feasibility study has revealed a low capital intensity for what is poised to become one of the world\u2019s largest HPMSM (High-Purity Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate) projects. Initial capital expenditure is estimated at US$281 million, including a contingency of US$32 million, with anticipated first commercial production slated for 2025.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the feasibility study has unveiled a remarkable geological upside, suggesting the potential for expanding the project and significantly extending its mine life. Exploration efforts to upgrade the 3.1 million metric tons of Inferred Resources in the K.Hill southerly extension are currently underway, offering promising prospects for future expansion and sustained economic growth.<\/p>\n
