{"id":37577,"date":"2023-11-01T17:41:27","date_gmt":"2023-11-01T17:41:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/botswana\/?p=37577"},"modified":"2023-11-01T15:47:50","modified_gmt":"2023-11-01T15:47:50","slug":"voter-registration-postponed-as-iec-udc-squabble","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/botswana\/all-news\/voter-registration-postponed-as-iec-udc-squabble","title":{"rendered":"Voter registration postponed as IEC, UDC squabble"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Botswana. <\/strong><\/span><b>Following the Francistown High Court\u2019s decision to allow the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) to observe the registration period which was supposed to begin today, the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has postponed the registration period as the opposition outfit breathes fire on its neck.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The period which officially starts the election cycle was supposed to run from November 1 to November 30, 2023 but it will now run from November 13 to December 8, 2023. The Francistown High court\u2019s Justice Gaolapelwe Ketlogetswe yesterday issued a rule nisi calling the respondent ,being the IEC and other interested parties to show cause on November 7, 2023 why the UDC registration clerks should be interdicted and restrained from monitoring the national elections registration process.<\/p>\n<p>The court decision meant that the UDC observers were supposed to temporarily start their observation today until the court\u2019s final determination on November 7. The IEC\u2019s swift move to amend the registration period means that the UDC observers won\u2019t go near their polling stations until the matter is made a final order by the High Court.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday\u2019s order was to allow the UDC clerks to record the names and national identity card numbers of the people registering to vote and record the serial numbers of the people registering to vote.
