Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Defence and Security, Mr Kagiso Mmusi has underscored the need to construct a cathedral in Maun to generate substantial local economic benefits.<\/b><\/p>\n

Mr Mmusi made the remarks when officiating at the thanksgiving service commonly known as \u2018Thobo\u2019 organised by Saint Augustine Catholic Mission Church in Maun on Sunday.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that as the town was a tourism destination of choice, a cathedral in Maun would be ideal as it would serve as an attraction for travellers who visit the area to appreciate the beauty of the famous Okavango Delta.<\/p>\n

He said in other countries cathedrals were some of the most visited sites as they served as places of formal religious activities as well as an attraction to tourists.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe the facility is ideal here in Maun more so that some tourists do not only come to appreciate beauty of flora and fauna, but also seek out new experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also commended the church for celebrating thanksgiving, saying the service was meant to unite congregants to give thanks to God for the gift of life through prayer and giving.<\/p>\n

Mr Mmusi encouraged the congregation to continue embracing the spirit of giving as a way of appreciating God\u2019s grace in their lives, adding that they should always do good under all circumstances for God\u2019s grace to follow them and change their lives.<\/p>\n

Parents were also advised to take the responsibility to promote their children\u2019s spiritual growth so that they impact positively on the society. Mr Mmusi said the country was faced with societal ills that required parents to guide and discipline children so that they grow into responsible citizens.<\/p>\n

He stressed the need to develop more local priests who would bring lasting solutions to local challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese days our children are addicted to drug and substance abuse and the vice cannot be curbed by police alone without our input as parents.<\/p>\n

We need to play our part and instill the right values in our children so that they take the lead and influence their peers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Mmusi urged fathers to create a friendly environment and engage with boys about the scourge of gender-based violence, which he labelled a national concern.<\/p>\n

Parish pastoral council chairperson, Ms Kebalepile Horatius said it was important for Christians to give thanks to God for his mercies, guidance, comfort and love upon their lives.<\/p>\n
