Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The core of the national budget is to uplift livelihoods.<\/b><\/p>\n

Minister of Communications Knowledge and Technology, Mr Thulagano Segokgo said when addressing staff during the ministry\u2019s end of the year session at Duma Grounds on December 15.<\/p>\n

He said the country faced social inequalities, hence the ministry spending should be skewed towards uplifting livelihoods and supporting local businesses, adding that the ministry had been doing well in supporting locals, hence there was a need to continue the good work.<\/p>\n

Mr Segokgo said he had received accolades on the role played by the ministry in uplifting livelihoods.<\/p>\n

He said supporting local businesses and fellow Batswana was the only way to grow the country\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n

He said the economy would not grow through growing the public sector, but rather through helping the private sector to grow.<\/p>\n

He said supporting locals\u2019 economy would also inspire other Batswana to venture into business. Mr Segokgo said through innovation and technology, more lives would be impacted, adding that the country was moving towards making technology gadgets easily accessible to all as a way of contributing to human development and bridging the digital accessibility gap.<\/p>\n

Further, he said the ministry achieved a lot this year, such as construction of a bio digester at Gothibamang Primary School in Letlhakeng and facilitating an intellectual property workshop for secondary schools and business enterprises.<\/p>\n

Other achievements included the launch of village connectivity initiative (SMART Bots).<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we celebrate success, we need to own up to some challenges, our biggest challenge has been the GABS system, the ministry and stakeholders are working round the clock to [solve the problem],\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Segokgo rxpressed hope that the system challenges would be addressed sooner, and further implored the staff to reflect on what needed to be improved in the coming year.<\/p>\n
