Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The heavy downpours that swept across Mahalapye leaving a trail of destruction on Tuesday, have claimed the life of a toddler, while two people are reported missing.<\/b><\/p>\n

According to Mahalapye District Council Public Relations Officer, Goratileone Kgwadu, a three-year-old died after drowning in a soakaway drain in a home and was confirmed dead by doctors upon arrival at hospital.<\/p>\n

Kgwadu said they have also launched a search for two people who have been reported missing following the floods.<\/p>\n

“This morning, we received a report from the police that one toddler has died after drowning in a soakaway in the homestead. \u201cFurthermore, two more people are reported missing. With the assistance of Botswana Defence Force scuba divers, a search has been launched to find these missing people,” Kgwadu said.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, he said the floods left a trail of destruction, with many households and shops submerged.<\/p>\n

He said the area received heavy downpours from 1130am to 1530am on Tuesday, leaving behind many people needing relief.<\/p>\n

“We received reports through the Social Welfare and Community Development office that some homes have submerged,\u201d said Kgwadu. \u201cWe immediately called for an impromptu meeting and recalled officers who were on leave. \u201cWe have set up five teams to do the assessment in the area. \u201cSo far, we have received reports from Tshikinyega, Di-line and Botalaote wards and hope to get the rest of other reports later,” he added.<\/p>\n

Kgwadu said a household of 17 members in Tshikinyega has been badly affected.<\/p>\n

“The household consists of nine children and eight adults aged between two years and 71 years. \u201cThe family has been assisted with tents and food items. \u201cWe are working closely with the office of the District Commissioner and the police to monitor the situation as the skies are promising more rainfall,” he added.<\/p>\n

He said they have mobilised resources from the nearest councils such as Kgatleng and Palapye as well as fraternal friends like churches to assist.<\/p>\n
