Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Life in Cabo delgado region is beginning to return to normal, head of SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), Professor Mpho Molomo has said.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking during President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisia\u0302\u20acTMs meeting with SAMIM Senior Mission leadership in Pemba, Professor Molomo said people who were displayed had started to return to their homes.<\/p>\n

He said insurgency has been neutralised though not yet eliminated, thus troops would continue to monitor the situation.<\/p>\n

Professor Molomo commended President Masisi for the role he played during his tenure as the chairperson of the organ,saying he was instrumental in facilitating the regional response to support Mozambique combat terrorism and acts of violent extremism and to restore order in affected areas of Cabo Delgado Province.<\/p>\n

By so doing, he said the President rekindled the spirit of mutual and collective co-existence within the region.<\/p>\n

Noting that the deployment of the troops was also during the height of COVID 19, he applauded SAMIM troops for being selfless in serving Mozambique during a very challenging time.<\/p>\n

He said as the head of the mission he was grateful for the support extended to Mozambique when it was in dire need.<\/p>\n

Professor Molomo said he was hopeful that Botswana would extend its assistance to Mozambique until the end of the mission in July 2024.<\/p>\n

More than 2 000 SADC troops were deployed to Cabo Delgado region in July 2021 following approval by the extraordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Maputo, Mozambique as a regional response to support Mozambique combat terrorism and acts of violent extremism.<\/p>\n

Cabo Delgado is the northern province of Mozambique where armed groups burnt villages, beheaded people and abduct women and girls.<\/p>\n
