Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Botswana Police Service (BPS) recently reported a sobering set of statistics for the festive period. While a decrease in sexual violence cases was recorded, the country continues to grapple with high incidences of road fatalities and alcohol-related offenses.<\/b><\/p>\n

Decline in Rape Cases, But Still a Global Issue<\/p>\n

During the recent festive period, Botswana recorded a total of 87 rape cases, a significant decrease from the 142 cases reported during the same period the previous year. Despite this decline, Botswana remains among the nations with the highest number of reported rape cases worldwide. This fact underscores the persisting issue of sexual violence in the country, even as authorities continue to strive for improved security and protection for victims.<\/p>\n

Road Fatalities and Accidents on the Rise<\/p>\n

The festive season also marked an alarming increase in road fatalities. A total of 45 lives were lost in 33 fatal road accidents, marking a stark increase from the 22 deaths recorded in the previous year\u2019s comparable period. Beyond the fatalities, the total number of road traffic accidents rose significantly, from 440 to 687. Many of these accidents were attributed to excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol.<\/p>\n

Driving Under the Influence: A Growing Concern<\/p>\n

Equally disconcerting is the increase in alcohol-related driving offenses. Of the 1234 drivers tested for alcohol, a staggering 523 exceeded the legal limit. This figure paints a worrying picture of the pervasive alcohol problem on Botswana\u2019s roads, a problem that evidently contributes significantly to the high accident rate.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, these figures underscore the ongoing challenges in road safety and sexual violence in Botswana. The police and other stakeholders continue their efforts to sensitize the public about road safety and the dangers of drunk driving, but the journey to improving the situation is far from over.<\/p>\n
