Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has praised Makerere University, for its significant influence as one of Africa\u2019s oldest learning establishments. <\/b><\/p>\n

After a tour of the University, Dr Masisi lauded the institution for its commitment to excellence in education and knowledge exchange. Reflecting on his own learning experience, he expressed a desire for Botswana\u2019s universities to establish collaborative ties with Makerere to learn from its successes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was taught by many academics who went through the gates of Makerere University. They never fell short of mentioning the rich culture of this university and its thirst for producing the best scholars. I want our universities to establish working relations with Makerere and learn how they do things,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, President Masisi acknowledged Makerere\u2019s outstanding track record in producing exceptional educators and highlighted the university\u2019s dedication to innovation and its capacity to translate innovative ideas into commercial ventures.<\/p>\n

He also emphasised the role of universities in shaping individuals into well-rounded professionals.<\/p>\n

During his visit, President Masisi was taken on tour of historical landmarks on campus, underscoring Makerere\u2019s legacy of nurturing renowned African leaders, including former Uganda president Milton Obote, Tanzania presidents Julius Nyerere and Benjamin Mkapa, DRC\u2019s Joseph Kabila, and Kenya\u2019s Mwai Kibaki. Makerere\u2019s history is deeply intertwined with Uganda\u2019s struggle for independence, as many of the country\u2019s key freedom fighters and advocates for self-determination are distinguished alumni of the university.<\/p>\n

Makerere College, established in 1922, evolved from a vocational school known as Uganda Technical College into the esteemed Makerere University, which stands as the oldest institution of higher learning in East Africa.<\/p>\n
