Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has assured the nation that the missing registration books will not have an effect on the registration outcome at the Marobela main kgotla polling station, polling district and polling constituency.<\/b><\/p>\n

Following an incident of stolen voters\u2019 registration books reported to have occurred on January 19, the IEC through a media release informed the nation of the incident in which a Registration Clerk engaged at Marobela main kgotla polling station in the Marobela-Mafhungo\/Hubona polling district (council ward) in the Nkange Constituency, had her vehicle broken into on January 19.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thieves made away with the Registration Clerk\u2019s possessions including a bag containing voters\u2019 registration books,\u201d says the media release. The incident was reported to the police and investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n

The media release says the Registration Clerk had in her possession, six voters\u2019 registration books of which two were fully used and voters issued with voters\u2019 registration cards. It says the third book had only two registered voters, while the rest of the book was unused.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn total, 52 voters were affected by the incident and the IEC has started locating the affected persons,\u201d says the media release. Consequently, the IEC has appealed to the voters in the affected polling district from the January 8 to January 19 to report to the said polling station for assistance in relation to their registration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Commission further wishes to request the public to remain calm as it deals with the matter, as well as doing everything possible to pre-empt a recurrence of similar incidents,\u201d says the media release.<\/p>\n
