Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Botswana and Zimbabwe continue to enjoy firm, cordial relations, as underpinned by Botswana having stood resolute in her stance that international sanctions against Zimbabwe are unfair and that there should be diplomatic solutions to any standoff with the international community.<\/b><\/p>\n

President, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi expressed the sentiments while welcoming Ambassador Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, the Special Envoy of Zimbabwe President, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa at the Office of the President yesterday.<\/p>\n

Dr Masisi told Ambassador Mumbengegwi that Botswana continued to oppose sanctions against Zimbabwe in multilateral fora, since the country believed there were more civil ways to address differences of opinion through diplomatic effort.<\/p>\n

The President said historical and recent global trends had proved that there was not a single perfect system of governance or elections, and that political challenges had been experienced even by global powers. In seeking to improve towards the aspirations of good governance and democracy, Dr Masisi said countries needed to fruitfully engage, instead of imposing sanctions that may have unintended consequences.<\/p>\n

Dr Masisi said he had recently interacted with Dr Mnangagwa at the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement as well as the 3rd Summit of G77+China in Kampala, Uganda.<\/p>\n

Ambassador Mumbengegwi, sent by President Mnangagwa to convey a message to Dr Masisi, thanked the President for a warm welcome and for promoting the good relations the two countries continued to enjoy.<\/p>\n

Having served the Zimbabwean government in various capacities since independence in 1980, including a considerable duration as Minister of Foreign Affairs, and at one point Zimbabwe\u2019s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Mumbengegwi currently holds the portfolio of Minister of State for Presidential Affairs and Monitoring Government Programmes.<\/p>\n
