Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>A man accused of raping a 13-year-old girl Samuel Selolwane has filed an urgent bail application before the High Court.<\/b><\/p>\n

Selolwane was arrested and detained by the Broadhurst police on Monday and later transferred to Gaborone Maximum Prison where he remains detained.<\/p>\n

Selolwane states that on January 27, 2024 he was called by the police where upon arrival he was informed that he was being investigated for rape involving a minor child of 13 years.<\/p>\n

In the petition, Selolwane denies the rape allegations saying they are based on “a tapestry of falsehoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

Selolwane states in his papers that because he presented himself to court upon request to him by the police he cannot be considered a flight risk and is therefore a candidate for bail, adding that his freedom was taken away without a just cause.<\/p>\n

Maintaining that he is innocent, Selolwane says there is no likelihood of him committing any offence while on bail. “This is evident from the fact that your petitioner surrendered himself to the police upon request to do so,” says Selolwane in his court papers, further describing himself as a law abiding citizen.<\/p>\n

Selolwane further says while the offence he has been charged with is a serious one, he is innocent of any wrongdoing. \u201cYour petitioner undertakes not to interfere with prosecution witnesses during the period of the case,\u201d pleads the accused.<\/p>\n

The case was postponed to Monday when Selolwane is expected to appear in person.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the main case before the Broadhurst Magistrate Court, Selolwane is charged along side the victim’s mother and her friend.<\/p>\n
