Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Ministry of Health has informed the public about Cholera outbreaks and associated deaths that have been reported across Africa, including in our neighbouring countries, being Zimbabwe and Zambia. Botswana has so far not recorded any Cholera case.<\/b><\/p>\n

Cholera is an acute life-threating illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacteria known as Vibrio cholerae. The disease is spread by ingesting food and water contaminated with Vibrio cholerae. It can also be spread through contact with faeces of an infected person. Its common symptoms include nausea and vomiting with frequent profuse rice water stools, fever and rapid loss of body fluids which, if left untreated, lead to dehydration and shock that may cause renal failure and loss of consciousness.<\/p>\n

The Ministry is on high alert and continues to monitor developments in the region and globally. Members of the public are advised to:<\/p>\n

Strictly observe personal hygiene measures, such as washing of hands with clean water and soap after using the toilet, before and after handling food and before feeding children.<\/p>\n

-Thoroughly cook food and eat it while hot.<\/p>\n

-Wash fruits and vegetables with clean water.<\/p>\n

-Dispose of human waste properly, including children\u2019s faeces.<\/p>\n

-Drink water from safe sources.<\/p>\n

-Boil water for 1 minute and store it in a clean covered container. The Ministry advised members of the Public to report to the nearest health facility immediately if you experience any of the above-mentioned signs and symptoms.<\/p>\n
