Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Former Botswana president Ian Khama left the country two years ago, fearing for his safety, but he is planning to be back with a bang ahead of the country\u2019s elections later this year.<\/b><\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing fancy about the Johannesburg offices of a prominent businessman friend that Ian Khama chose for the coffee meeting. It\u2019s practical, and discreet, and besides, Ian Khama isn\u2019t into coffee. The grey light bomber-style jacket he\u2019s wearing with pitch black buttoned-up shirt and trousers in the 30 Celsius summer heat has nothing to do with it. \u201cI prefer hot chocolate,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

His half-dozen minders settle outside the boardroom where we chat, two of them in an office across the hallway, within eyeshot. \u201cI\u2019ve got private security,\u201d Khama says. He doesn\u2019t trust the administration of his successor, President Mokgweetsi Masisi for the perks he\u2019s entitled to as former president. He also lost a spat early on in Masisi\u2019s presidency over access to state-owned planes, which Khama often piloted himself when he was president.<\/p>\n
