Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Following the Law Society of Botswana’s (LSB) decision to abstain from the opening of the Legal Year , Parks Tafa, a senior member of the bar, expressed his disappointment with the LSB’s decision.<\/b><\/p>\n

Last week, the LSB released a statement announcing their boycott of the government-led ceremony, opting to host its own this morning. The LSB expressed concern over the perceived deterioration of the judiciary over the years. “Although the law society has withheld their presence, it is not something that has to be encouraged,\u201d Tafa said at the ceremony, criticised this move.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Tafa, representing the lawyers’ association, voiced support for declaring the legal year.<\/p>\n

“Someone from the lawyers association has to support the motion for the legal year to be declared, and I’m here on behalf of the lawyers association to agree with the motion,” he said.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Tafa highlighted the pivotal role of the courts in handling disputes, including those involving the legal profession and its associations.<\/p>\n

“Courts have the ability to handle disputes, even disputes about themselves, so I understand that through proper channels these disputes can be resolved,” Tafa observed.<\/p>\n

He emphasised the need for transparency and the importance of resolving conflicts through the proper channels. Tafa urged lawyers not to withhold their labour, underlining the significance of upholding professional responsibilities and continuing to serve the interests of justice.<\/p>\n

“Lawyers should not withhold labour; members of the public expect better from us,” said Tafa.<\/p>\n
