Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has emphasised the importance of giving women the respect they deserve.<\/b><\/p>\n

Speaking at the International Women\u2019s Day commemoration in Paje on Wednesday, President Masisi called on all members of society to reflect on their origins and recognise the pivotal role of women.<\/p>\n

He urged men to view women with love, respect, and dignity, highlighting women as invaluable treasures that needed to be cherished.<\/p>\n

He said understanding and acknowledging women\u2019s significance as life-givers was critical in eradicating gender-based violence (GBV).<\/p>\n

\u201cIf men can realise that women are life-givers , they will stop GBV,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on historical gender discrimination and its impacts, President Masisi lamented the injustices faced by women and girls, including limited opportunities, early marriages, and gender-based violence.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the pre-independence era, boys were accorded an opportunity to access education while the girl child stayed home to do domestic chores and some to prepare for marriage,\u201d the President said.<\/p>\n

He stressed the need for society to rectify past wrongs and treat women with the equality and dignity they deserved.<\/p>\n

The event, focused on the theme, Invest In Women: Accelerate Progress, underscored the importance of empowering women economically to achieve true societal advancement.<\/p>\n

President Masisi urged attendees to support and uplift women in all spheres of life.<\/p>\n

As Botswana moves towards equality and inclusivity in education and beyond, President Masisi highlighted the successes of girls and women in various fields, including sports.<\/p>\n

He referenced prominent figures like Mpule Kwelagobe and Lesego Chombo, lauding their achievements and calling for continued support for women\u2019s endeavors.<\/p>\n

President Masisi reiterated the necessity of respecting women and treating them with dignity.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that gender equality was not just a goal but was fundamental to a thriving and harmonious society.<\/p>\n
