Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) Vice Chancellor, Professor Ketlhatlogile Mosepele says it is important to come up with collective commitment to finding sustainable solutions to the challenges posed by climate change. <\/b><\/p>\n

Prof. Mosepele was giving the opening remarks on Wednesday at BUAN during a Public Lecture titled; The African-Caribbean Climate Action on Adaptation and Mitigation Measures, by President of The Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute, Dr Raveenia Roberts-Hanna.<\/p>\n

He said the lecture by Dr Roberts-Hanna, who was part of the team led by the Commonwealth of the Bahamas Prime Minister, Mr Philip Davis on an official visit to Botswana, underscored the significance of shared commitment to addressing the critical issues of climate change and sustainability facing the world today.<\/p>\n

He said challenges that were brought about by climate change were accentuated in small island developing states such as The Commonwealth of the Bahamas and landlocked, semi-arid countries such as Botswana. Prof. Mosepele said the lecture was a call to global action on combating climate change and its effects.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are bound together by similar challenges and your lecture today is an affirmation of the need for collective action against the scourge of climate change. It highlights the need for a South-South cooperation in dealing with these challenges,\u201d he said<\/p>\n

He said the lecture was a reminder of the pressing challenges facing the planet. Prof. Mosepele said climate change transcended borders and affected all. \u201cIt is an existential threat to humanity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prof. Mosepele said the dedication of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas\u2019 Prime Minister to advancing climate action and advocating for adaptation and mitigation measures served as an inspiration to all. \u201cThis lecture at BUAN today reaffirms our collective commitment to finding sustainable solutions to the challenges posed by climate change,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe lecture provides us with a valuable opportunity to gain insights into innovative approaches and best practices from across different regions. By sharing experiences and expertise, we can strengthen our collective efforts towards building resilience and mitigating the impact of climate change,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said it would also initiate collaboration between academic institutions in Botswana and The Commonwealth of the Bahamas. \u201cAs our commitment towards this endeavour, BUAN has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Bahamas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Prof. Mosepele said BUAN had also signed an MoU with the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute.<\/p>\n

Through the initiatives, Prof. Mosepele said BUAN was looking forward to increased staff and student mobility between Botswana and the Bahamas. \u201cBUAN\u2019s aim is to facilitate increased South-South collaboration in the creation and generation of knowledge for sustainable development,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said it was important to seize opportunities to engage in meaningful discourse and forge partnerships that would drive positive change. \u201cAs we embark on this journey towards a more sustainable and resilient future, let us remember that our actions today will shape the world of tomorrow,\u201d Prof. Mosepele said.<\/p>\n
