Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Government departments have been commended for their collaborative effort in swiftly eradicating Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Zone 6b, North East District, achieving the milestone in less than 20 months, setting a new record in the country\u2019s FMD history.<\/b><\/p>\n

Addressing employees from different government departments in Francistown, Minister of Agriculture, Mr Fidelis Molao praised the achievement, noting the significance of teamwork and timely actions in effectively combating FMD outbreaks. Minister Molao highlighted the efficient coordination between various government agencies, emphasising the protection of local livestock and the economy.<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, Minister Molao stated that the focus would shift towards the restocking exercise, urging stakeholders to ensure a responsible and vigilant process to prevent potential outbreaks.<\/p>\n

He said that the eradication of FMD not only addressed immediate needs but also laid a solid foundation for the growth and resilience of Botswana\u2019s livestock industry.<\/p>\n

Minister Molao called for continued collaboration among government departments to maintain the momentum gained during the eradication process, aiming to prevent the recurrence of the disease.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged the invaluable role of government departments in guiding the restocking efforts and stressed the importance of cooperation in safeguarding the agricultural sector.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Dr Boitumelo Mogome-Maseko, the deputy permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture – Livestock Farming, highlighted the crucial role of extension workers in protecting the livestock sector. She highlighted the need for expert guidance, monitoring animal health, and promoting best practices to ensure sector resilience and growth, especially in light of recent FMD outbreaks.<\/p>\n

As Botswana moves forward with the restocking exercise, Dr Mogome-Maseko underscored the essential contribution of extension workers in preventing disease recurrence and supporting the agricultural community.<\/p>\n

She urged vigilance against cross-border transmission risks and stressed the importance of maintaining strong biosecurity measures to safeguard Botswana\u2019s livestock sector.<\/p>\n

For his part, Tati East MP, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe commended the successful eradication process, acknowledging the dedication of civil servants and the positive outcome achieved.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile Certificates were awarded to various departments and individuals for their outstanding contributions to the disease eradication efforts.<\/p>\n
