Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Minister of Health Dr Edwin Dikoloti, leaves for Geneva, Switzerland, tomorrow where he will assume the 77th World Health Assembly presidency. <\/b><\/p>\n

A press release from the Ministry of Health states that the 77th World Health Assembly will take place from 27 May to June 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs president of the World Health Assembly, Dr Dikoloti will give an opening statement of the assembly and also chair the proceedings,\u201d the release states. It also says that the World Health Assembly, which comprises 194 member countries from across the world, is the supreme decision making body of the WHO.<\/p>\n

Further the release also states that the Assembly, which is attended by ministers of health from across the 194 member states, takes crucial decisions about the policies, strategies, budget and appointment of the Director General of the WHO, amongst others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe assembly, will among others, discuss WHO General Programme of Work, which sets strategies and priorities for the next five years, for global health, adopt the WHO Pandemic Treaty and Revisions to the International Health Regulations,\u201d the release says.<\/p>\n

The two international instruments have been under negotiation by member states, including Botswana, for the past two years.<\/p>\n

Drawing from lessons learnt from past experiences including the COVID-19 pandemic, the instruments are aimed at setting the necessary rules and policies for prevention, preparedness and response to global health emergencies.<\/p>\n

Dr Dikoloti will be accompanied by Permanent Secretary Professor Oatlhokwa Nkomazana and other senior officials from the ministry. While The Assistant Minister of Health Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe will hold fort. Dr Dikoloti is expected back in office on June 4.<\/p>\n
