Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Farmers in Kgatleng East along the border with South Africa have been urged to be cautious and vigilant about their livestock crossing the boundary because of the outbreak of Food and Mouth Disease (FMD) in some provinces of the neighbouring country. <\/b><\/p>\n

Addressing farmers and stakeholders recently in Mmathubudukwane, a principal scientific officer in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Kebitselepe Motsele said the disease was likely to spread to Botswana if farmers did not take the necessary precautionary measures.<\/p>\n

He advised them to kraal their livestock at night so that they did not find the opportunity to cross to South Africa as it had happened in the past.<\/p>\n

He said government was concerned about the cross border movement of livestock and that it increased the chances of FMD spreading into the country.<\/p>\n

The cloven-hoofed animal disease has been spreading in some provinces of South Africa. Mr Motsele informed farmers that any livestock that crossed into South Africa would not be allowed back and would be killed.<\/p>\n

Kgatleng Farmers Association representative, Mr Koti Molefe appreciated the efforts of the ministry to update them and urged authorities to erect cordon fences to fight the disease.Mr Molefe also urged farmers to join hands with government to contain the spread of FMD.<\/p>\n
