Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Game Mompe\u2019s appointment to serve in the Regional Organising Committee (ROC) for the 11th edition of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) region 5 youth games is set to contribute to Botswana Cycling Association (BCA)\u2019s international profile.<\/b><\/p>\n

Mompe, BCA secretary general, will take on the role of ROC chairperson of protocol, ceremonies and volunteers while utilising her expertise to ensure the success of the games.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer appointment will contribute to BCA\u2019s international profile in the unified development of cycling, particularly women in cycling, which is the core of Union Cycling International (UCI), of which Botswana is a member,\u201d said BCA president Kagiso Potongwane in an interview. He said this appointment would add value to the association\u2019s profile in respect to support opportunities pertaining to the development of women in cycling.<\/p>\n

\u201cCurrently cycling is not a popular sport and as a federation we need more female athletes and administrators.<\/p>\n

Therefore, Mompe\u2019s appointment is an indication to women that cycling and sports in general can create opportunities for personal growth and development,\u201d Potongwane said.<\/p>\n

He further said the appointment also reflected Mompe\u2019s outstanding contributions to sports and her unwavering commitment to youth development, and \u2018we are thrilled as an association and cycling community for her achievement\u2019.<\/p>\n

Excited about the appointment, Mompe said her journey at Tsela Riders cycling club as a chairperson from 2014 to 2016 paid off.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring that time, I was fortunate to be a part of strategic sessions hosted by Kutlo Mogosana, whose teachings opened my eyes and mind. I am grateful for such.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said the support of the cycling community and leadership as well as the cycling clubs also paved her path for the appointment, having worked with various sport organisations in event hosting.<\/p>\n

She said being part of the protocol team in events that Botswana hosted had also played a big role in her being recognised for such an appointment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough not the first Motswana to serve in the AUSC region, Mompe is the first from the cycling code.<\/p>\n

She has served in the AUSC region 5 youth games in the Botswana team as a welfare and safeguarding officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a learning curve for my personal development, and I aim to deliver what the mandate requires of me.<\/p>\n

I will be going through the scope of protocols above local organisation level which I have been accustomed to, and for me to be able to efficiently do that I have to be able to work with others as a team, exercise self-discipline and self-sacrifice as well as demonstrate ability to work independently, which characters will allow me to meet deadlines,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am not going there as an individual or cycling association, but as a representative of Botswana\u201d Mompe said,<\/p>\n

The AUSC region 5 youth games will take place in Windhoek, Namibia next year June.<\/p>\n
