Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Despite the increasing emphasis placed on preschool education and its recognition in the revised National Education Policy, a significant number of teachers at the preschool level remain untrained, as per the 2022 Pre-Primary Education Statistics briefs published by Statistics Botswana in May.<\/b><\/p>\n

The report highlights that this could potentially compromise the quality of education at that level.<\/p>\n

Among all teachers in that year, it was noted that 3,111 were trained teachers, while 261 teachers were untrained.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the report indicates that the majority of untrained teachers, approximately 77.8 per cent, were employed by private schools.<\/p>\n

It also reveals that out of the citizen teachers, around 257 were unqualified, while only four foreign teachers were found to be unqualified.<\/p>\n

The majority of qualified teachers held diplomas (1,552) or certificates (1,124), with 222 teachers possessing bachelor\u2019s degrees and 261 being unqualified.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the report mentions that 203 teachers held other teaching qualifications, with 10 of them having master\u2019s degrees.<\/p>\n

In terms of school ownership, the proportion of daycare and pre-primary schools was highest for government-owned institutions, followed by private-owned ones.<\/p>\n

Regarding enrollment, private schools had the highest number of pupils enrolled, followed by community schools, churches, and non-governmental organisational schools.<\/p>\n

The report also notes that day care and nursery school enrollment was highest in the central region for both males and females, followed by the southern and southeast regions respectively.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, it states that there were 122 learners with special education needs enrolled in day care and nursery schools nationwide in the 2022 academic year.<\/p>\n

The majority of these pupils had speech disorders, followed by intellectual disabilities, deafness, visual impairments, and attention deficit disorder.<\/p>\n

Most pupils with specialeducation needs in day care and nursery schools nationwide were located in the North West region, followed by the South East region.<\/p>\n

These statistics on pre-primary education in Botswana are gathered from data collected through the 2022 annual school census conducted by Statistics Botswana.<\/p>\n
