Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Thamaga-Molepolole Asphalt overlay including Gakgatla access road project is at 90 per cent progress. <\/b><\/p>\n

This was revealed by the Mogoditshane-Thamaga District Council chairperson, Mr Ofentse Mafoko at the opening of the district\u2019s full council session on Monday.<\/p>\n

The council chairperson said the road surfacing was ongoing and 45km out of 50km of the road had been resurfaced while pothole patching was ongoing.<\/p>\n

On other projects, Mr Mafoko said the construction of two primary schools in Mogoditshane and Thamaga were progressing well and both projects stood at 95 per cent with most works at finishing stages.<\/p>\n

However, he said the two contractors for the projects had requested for extension of time while their request had been referred to the Kweneng District Council for consideration.<\/p>\n

Mr Mafoko further said Gender-Based Violence (GBV) remained a prevalent issue, with its devastating impact on the lives of victims and their loved ones.<\/p>\n

With GBV considered a human rights violation, he said its persistent occurrence was both alarming and heartbreaking. He further said the devastating impact of GBV was evidenced by statistics provided by authorities in the Mogoditshane policing area.<\/p>\n

\u201cA staggering one in three women are reportedly experiencing physical or sexual violence on a daily basis in Mogoditshane,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

On road and traffic offences, he said it was disheartening that road traffic accidents resulting in fatalities continued to be a thorn in the flesh.<\/p>\n

He said during the quarter ending March this year, a total of 15 fatalities were recorded in the district.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a problem considering the fact that most families suffer loss, leaving children as orphans and families as destitute especially if the deceased was the sole breadwinner,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

However, initiatives such as sobriety, checkpoints and saturation patrols programmes, road safety campaigns, highway patrols, among others, were undertaken to curb the problem.<\/p>\n

On other issues, the chairperson announced that the Mogoditshane cluster had been identified as one of the areas by Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) where the first batch of smart metres would be introduced as the corporation strived to improve customer service by replacing the existing mechanical water supply plot metres with digital prepaid metres.<\/p>\n

He said the smart metering project would not only assist customers manage their water consumption but also provide debt management solutions for the corporation and its customers.<\/p>\n
