Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>This week Botswana joined the rest of the world to mark the Paris 2024 Olympic Games baton exchange relay celebrations. The country was receiving the baton from Bulgaria and handed it over to Cameroon and Libya.<\/b><\/p>\n

The French embassy in Botswana has been labelled the \u2018Terre de Jeux 2024\u2019 by the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Organising Committee, which allows them to organise various events around the theme of sports ahead of Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) will send a team to the Summer Games.<\/p>\n

The commemoration was held on Tuesday at the French embassy after a walk to the Three Dikgosi Monument in Gaborone. Speaking to Mmegi Sport, the France’s ambassador to Botswana, Lauren Beau said France is looking forward to hosting the Olympics and it would be a 50% women and 50% men event, which is a big step in Olympics history.<\/p>\n

The Around the World relay or Relais Autor de Monde is a one-hour walk that took place in a period of 24 hours, all around the world, with different French embassies organising individual events during their given time slots and passing the baton on to other participating nations respectively.<\/p>\n

The Around the World Relay was also held to raise awareness and promote the Paris 2024 Games in Botswana.<\/p>\n

Botswana had a successful showing at the last Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games winning a bronze medal in the men\u2019s 4x400m relay team that comprised of Isaac Makwala, Bayapo Ndori, Zibane Ngozi and Baboloki Thebe. Leungo Scotch and Anthony Pesela were on the bench. The country had sent a team of 13 athletes competing in four sporting codes, namely, athletics, swimming, boxing and weightlifting.<\/p>\n

Botswana has been competing in the Olympics since 1980. Since participation, the country has so far won two medals with Nijel Amos being the first to bring a silver medal from the 2012 London Olympics.<\/p>\n
