Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Government, through the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture, has launched a temporary initiative in place of schools, dubbed the a\u0302\u20ac \u0303Matlhagolatselaa\u0302\u20acTM Sport programme.<\/b><\/p>\n

The temporary programme is expected to be implemented next term while a long term solution is being sought by all stakeholders following the five-year suspension of sport activities in schools.<\/p>\n

a\u0302\u20ac\u0153Through this programme, we are simply saying that school sport is making a return, and Matlhagolatsela is now being rolled-out across the country in various schools including some of which are in Maun,a\u0302\u20ac\u009d Honourable Tumiso Rakgare announced during the programme launch held at Maun Sport Complex on August 23.<\/p>\n

Mr Rakgare said there had a collective concern as a nation and government, that the absence of sport in schools would not only ultimately cause a decline to the national teamsa\u0302\u20acTM performance, but would also compromise holistic child development.<\/p>\n

However, he said all key stakeholders were committed to finding a long lasting solution that would ensure that grassroots development of sport was conducted in a systematic way that would produce elite athletes.<\/p>\n

He appreciated that the initiative would give children the opportunity to dream, compete and shine on both local and international stages.<\/p>\n

He said despite the challenges that had come with the suspension of school sport, he was reliably informed that some schools, particularly in Kanye and Gaborone, continued to facilitate sport, something he said evidenced resilience and passion that existed within the communities.<\/p>\n

He thus commended teachers, parents and all volunteers who had remained steadfast in their support of young athletes.<\/p>\n

a\u0302\u20ac\u0153It would be amiss of us not to celebrate the incredible dedication of our coaches, who work tirelessly to nurture the next generation of sporting talent. Individuals like Kebonyemodisa a\u0302\u20ac \u0303Dosea\u0302\u20acTM Mosimanyane, Mmeleko a\u0302\u20ac \u0303Maxa\u0302\u20acTM Ndolo and Chilume a\u0302\u20ac \u0303Chippaa\u0302\u20acTM Ntshwarang have been instrumental in producing some of our country’s top sportspeople. Their commitment to excellence has been unwavering and for that, we owe them a debt of gratitude,a\u0302\u20ac\u009d he added.<\/p>\n

He further acknowledged outstanding contribution of Mosimananye, saying he had also played a pivotal role in the development of many track athletes, including national champions in the likes of Leungo Scotch who is an Olympic medallist in the 4x400m relay, having clinched his second medal at the recently concluded 2024 Paris Olympic Games.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Minister Rakgare presented the history making Team Botswana to the North West community and appreciated that majority of the athletes such as Anthony Pesela, Tshepiso Masalela, Kethobogile Haengura, Victor Ntweng, Tumo Nkape, including coach Mosimanyane were from the region.<\/p>\n

The athletes, he said were a living proof of what could be achieved when investing in grassroots development and nurture young talent.<\/p>\n

a\u0302\u20ac\u0153It is encouraging to see young athletes who made it for the first time at the just ended Olympic Games showing resilience and challenging the worlda\u0302\u20acTMs best who had competed at the stage before,a\u0302\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n

He called on all stakeholders, including the tourism operators, to invest in sports to ensure that every child in Botswana could realise their full potential through sport and available programmes just like the newly introduced Matlhagolatsela Sport Programme.<\/p>\n

He said the teama\u0302\u20acTMs performance at the Olympic Games, if maintained, would ensure continued happiness as a nation and unity regardless of ethnic backgrounds, political or religious affiliations.<\/p>\n

Kgosi Kealetile Moremi welcomed the programme launch in Maun, saying it indicated that government recognised the contribution of the region towards development and growth of sport in the country.<\/p>\n

She assured leadership support towards the programme noting that sport had a lot of social, economic and health benefits, among others and also expressed hope that coaches would take the programme seriously to ensure it produced expected results.<\/p>\n

Maun East MP, Mr Goretetse Kekgonegile also appreciated the programme saying it would motivate more youngsters to participate and reap the benefits brought by sport.<\/p>\n

Mr Kekgonegile said sport could help reduce unemployment among youth.<\/p>\n

a\u0302\u20ac\u0153Investing in sports, introducing more sports development programmes and establishing more sports academies, is critical to identify raw talent, nurture and develop it. We will consider using funding from the Community Constituency Programme to establish such facilities so that passionate sport administrators can operate them,a\u0302\u20ac\u009d he said.<\/p>\n
