{"id":59540,"date":"2024-11-26T18:31:04","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T18:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/botswana\/all-news\/bta-host-successful-cat-under-14"},"modified":"2024-11-26T18:45:09","modified_gmt":"2024-11-26T18:45:09","slug":"bta-host-successful-cat-under-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/botswana\/all-news\/bta-host-successful-cat-under-14","title":{"rendered":"BTA Host Successful CAT under 14"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Botswana. <\/strong><\/span><b>Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) hosted a successful two week CAT Under 14 circuit, which took place in Gaborone.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>During the circuit, Botswana won two gold medals in the girls category, that is a girls singles medals courtesy of 12 year-old Malak Macheng and doubles medals courtesy of Malak and Angela Chakanyuka.<\/p>\n<p>Botswana\u2019s Tinashe Phatshwane who paired with Zimbabwean Muchengeti Manzungu bagged a gold medal in the boys\u2019 doubles.<\/p>\n<p>BTA vice president, Nonofo Othusitse told BOPA that the event was a great two weeks of tennis since they successfully hosted two legs of the Confederation of African Tennis 14 and Under Circuit.<\/p>\n<p>The circuit, he said was an opportunity for the players to be ranked in the CAT rankings and also gave them international exposure, which in the long run improved their standard of play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are happy with the overall tournament experience. Players were from Namibia, Kenya and Zimbabwean in addition to Botswana. In terms of entries, we had 28 players in the boys\u2019 draws and 18 of them were local players. In the girls\u2019 draw, we had a total of 18 players of which 11 were local,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Othusitse said local players were impressive with the boys reaching the quarterfinals in the singles and ending with a gold medalist in Tinashe Phatshwane in the boys\u2019 doubles.<\/p>\n<p>The girls, he said were equally good with Malak Macheng winning the girls\u2019 singles championships back to back.<\/p>\n<p>He said Malak also partnered with Angel Chakanyuka to win doubles championship back to back.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are expecting a number of our players who had no CAT rankings to be ranked post this event. We are also expecting huge improvements on individual players\u2019 rankings.
