Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Assistant Minister for State President, Ms Maipelo Mophuting, has assured Batswana of the government\u2019s commitment to addressing the needs of its citizens.<\/b><\/p>\n

In an interview in Tumasera on Tuesday, which followed a tour of areas affected by a violent hailstorm that struck Tswapong South villages last month, Ms Mophuting emphasised the importance of collaboration with local communities to assess the impact of the disaster and to provide appropriate assistance to victims.<\/p>\n

Ms Mophuting acknowledged the resilience of some citizens striving for self-reliance but insisted that government support was essential during difficult times, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating hailstorm.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government is working to cushion citizens against the hardships that have arisen as a result of the storm,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Highlighting the extent of the disaster, the assistant minister noted that the hailstorm caused serious damage, including roofs blown off homes, shattered vehicle windows, and significant destruction to schools. \u201cThe hailstorm has left behind a trail of destruction,\u201d Ms Mophuting stated, pointing to damage at Seleka Primary School where 347 windowpanes and solar panels were reported destroyed.<\/p>\n

To address the situation, an emergency relief programme has been initiated to stabilise the impacted communities.<\/p>\n

She also mentioned that her ministry, alongside the area MP, was exploring additional support measures for the affected families, particularly those facing economic hardships.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are determined to act in good faith and ensure that classroom blocks are restored swiftly for the children\u2019s return to education,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Dr Kesitegile Gobotswang, MP for Tswapong South, described the hailstorm as unprecedentedly violent for the region. He confirmed that extensive assessments have been conducted on the damage and reiterated his commitment to securing necessary help for the constituents.<\/p>\n

He emphasised that families with low incomes were particularly vulnerable and in need of assistance beyond what they can provide for themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is vital to ensure that our Disaster Management Teams at the community level are adequately equipped to respond swiftly to crises like this,\u201d Dr Gobotswang said.<\/p>\n

Ms Koosentse Mothudi, head of Seleka Primary School, reported significant damage to the school\u2019s infrastructure, which had only recently undergone major maintenance. \u201cWe are collaborating with insurance companies to determine the best course of action for repairs and recovery,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Ms Opelo Mongwa, Mahalapye District Council\u2019s deputy secretary for operations, confirmed that a damage assessment report has been completed and submitted for insurance processing. She assured the public that urgent needs such as food and clothing for the affected families are being prioritized.<\/p>\n

The Village Development Committee (VDC) umbrella chairperson for Tumasera, Mr Modise Diboko, highlighted Malete, Diphutswa, and Rasesa as some of the hardest-hit areas. \u201cLet\u2019s work together with the relevant authorities to restore normal services in the affected regions,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n

Community members have expressed their frustrations over the landscape and drainage issues that contributed to local flooding.<\/p>\n

Mr Sennye Olatotse, a resident of Malete ward, voiced his concerns, noting damage to his vehicles and property due to the storm. \u201cWe need the relevant authorities to take swift action to remedy the situation,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
