Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The new government\u2019s success hinges on quality leadership fostering a high-performance culture.<\/b><\/p>\n

Therefore, Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mr Ketlhalefile Motshegwa said there should be some customer oriented change agents, with strong integrity, as well as excellent problem solving skills and strategic thinkers in government.<\/p>\n

He said this during mayors and council chairpersons forum in Francistown. Mr Motshegwa called on the council leadership to demonstrate high performance and unwavering commitment to serving Batswana regardless of political afflication.<\/p>\n

He said the new government demanded transformational leadership.True leadership, he explained, was not about authority, but also selfless service and inspiring others to achieve their full potential.<\/p>\n

He stressed that agile government structures responsive to community needs and promoting local empowerment were required. He further said govenment aimed to empower local authorities to manage their own budgets, among other things.<\/p>\n

Minister Motshegwa also called for harmonious working relationship between political and administrative staff to achieve results. He further condemned corruption in local authorities saying the ministry\u2019s reputation had been taranished by currupt practices in councils.<\/p>\n

Also, he said plans were in place to have a local govennment symposium in April to revitalise the role of local authorities.<\/p>\n

In her welcome remarks, the ministry\u2019s Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ms Baipelelang Photlokwe explained that the forum, which had brought together the minister, mayors, and chairpersons of 31 districts, served a dual purpose.<\/p>\n

Firstly, she said it provided a platform for direct engagement between the minister and local government leadership, fostering open communication and feedback.<\/p>\n

Secondly, the forum, she said aimed to introduce the new government\u2019s agenda and priorities to local authorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe goal is to ensure alignment between the new administration\u2019s expectations, the ministry\u2019s roadmap and the work of local governments, paving the way for collaborative progress and a clear path forward.<\/p>\n
