Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>A 64-year-old man of Thalerwa ward in Serowe was recently scammed of cash amounting to P8,700 after he was tricked by fraudsters claiming to be agents of Orange Botswana.<\/b><\/p>\n

Serowe police station commander, superintendent Poloko Oteng said surprisingly the old man had earlier been to the station to alert the police about suspicious phone calls only to be swindled money amounting to P8,700 later on.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen, fraudsters phoned the old man when he was still with the police pretending to be calling from Orange and the police tried to intervene, warning the fraudsters but we were shocked when the sexagenarian later during the day came to report that he was swindled of money. The police had cautioned the old man not to entertain the fraudsters\u2019 phone calls but we were shocked only later on in the day when he reported that he was tricked by scammers (he was warned about),\u201d Oteng said.<\/p>\n

Orange Botswana and the police have in the past issued a warning to clients and members of the public of a scam that involves fraudsters using the popular Orange Money service to trick individuals. Despite the warning, Serowe police continue to record cases of obtaining by false pretences of which people are swindled of large sums of money.<\/p>\n
