Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Vice President and Minister of Finance, Mr Ndaba Gaolathe has urged the nation to maintain a clean environment to realise the full potential of tourism.<\/b><\/p>\n

Mr Gaolathe, who was participating in a clean-up campaign initiative at Gaborone West on April12 stressed that tourism had become Botswana\u2019s new diamond, with visitors from around the world coming to appreciate its natural beauty, including rivers and wildlife.<\/p>\n

He explained that this potential could only be fully realised if the environment is maintained.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce the environment becomes an eyesore, it symbolises that the people do not care,\u201d said Mr Gaolathe who is also Member of Parliament for Gaborone Bonnington South.<\/p>\n

He said that it was time to diversify into other avenues such as tourism and human capital development.<\/p>\n

Gaolathe urged the country to preserve its natural resources amid uncertain times.<\/p>\n

While participating in the street clean-up, Mr Gaolathe interacted with various individuals along the route, including young children, whom he expressed great appreciation for during those brief exchanges.He commended those who took time out of their schedules to join the campaign, especially children, stressing that it was necessary to catch them young.<\/p>\n

The national clean-up campaign, officially launched by President Advocate Duma Boko in March, aims to foster a culture of cleanliness, promote environmental stewardship, and improve public health by designating the second Saturday of every month for community cleaning activities.<\/p>\n

Bophirima ward councillor, Ms Mankie Sekete, appealed to the public, saying that when such initiatives were organised, regardless of political affiliation, all should attend and participate wholeheartedly.<\/p>\n

She added that setting aside party differences was crucial for the campaign to succeed and serve the nation\u2019s best interests.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Ms Sekete urged that whenever people gather, they should normalise the practice of avoiding littering and discard the mentality that cleaning was the responsibility of hired workers. Instead, she called on everyone to take ownership of their environment for a cleaner, healthier country.<\/p>\n
