as her work goes on show in the UK for the first time.<\/b><br \/>\nMaier worked as a nanny in New York and Chicago, but also secretly captured everyday life on the streets.<\/p>\n<p>A selection of her art is on show at MK Gallery in Milton Keynes.<\/p>\n<p>Director Anthony Spira said she was &#8220;one of the greatest recorders&#8221; of 20th Century American life.<\/p>\n<p>The gallery said the exhibition had attracted bookings by people from the United States and the Netherlands, as well as from across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Curator Anne Morin described Maier as &#8220;an invisible woman who acceded to be an icon&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9359 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_2.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_2.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><br \/>\nAn image taken by Maier in New York in 1953<\/p>\n<p>Born in 1926, Maier worked as a nanny for more than 40 years and photographed daily life in both New York and Chicago in the 1950s and 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>She captured the relationships, interactions, and expressions of people through striking portraits, presenting a distinctive record of urban America in the mid-20th Century.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"976\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9360 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_3.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_3.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_3-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><br \/>\nMaier would often photograph women and children<\/p>\n<p>Maier also took many self-portraits, frequently casting herself in a shadow or reflection in a mirror.<\/p>\n<p>She produced more than 150,000 images as well as Super 8 and 16mm films, prints, audio tapes, and reams of undeveloped film which she shared with virtually no-one in her lifetime.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"979\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9361 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_4.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_4.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_4-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_4-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_4-768x770.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><br \/>\nAn image of a boy taken in New York on 3 September 1954<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, two years before her death, her work was found in a storage locker and auctioned for $400.<\/p>\n<p>The man who bought them, John Maloof, realised the images were special but had no clue who had taken them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"972\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9362 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_5.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_5.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_5-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_5-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_5-768x765.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><br \/>\nMaier had a fascination for observing and recording everyday life<\/p>\n<p>After amassing an archive of up to 100,000 negatives and some 3,000 prints, Mr Maloof managed to give the anonymous photographer an identity &#8211; but it was not until after Maier had died.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9363 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_6.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_6.jpg 976w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_6-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/botswana\/sites\/38\/2022\/06\/postMediaimg_39_6-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" \/><br \/>\nCurator Anne Morin said the exhibition was a &#8220;beautiful tribute&#8221;
