Michel Thierry Atangana est un ing\u00e9nieur financier franco-camerounais. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 emprisonn\u00e9 durant 17 ans, dont cinq \u00e0 l’isolement, au Cameroun.<\/p>\n

Un 12 mai 1997, son destin a bascul\u00e9. Il est interpell\u00e9 par des \u00e9l\u00e9ments des forces sp\u00e9ciales camerounaises, accus\u00e9 de soutenir un opposant au gouvernement, Titus Edzoa.<\/p>\n

Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 arr\u00eat\u00e9 et l\u2019ensemble de ses biens ont \u00e9t\u00e9 saisis. Dans une interview dans les colonnes de Jeune Afrique, il indique comment son destin a bascul\u00e9 et comment il a v\u00e9cu l\u2019enfer.<\/p>\n

Aujourd\u2019hui, le statut de prisonnier d’opinion lui a \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnu par Amnesty International.<\/p>\n

D\u00e9tenu de mani\u00e8re arbitraire au Cameroun pendant dix-sept ans, cet ing\u00e9nieur financier franco-camerounais raconte comment, un certain 12 mai 1997, son destin a bascul\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\u00ab C\u2019\u00e9tait \u00e9tait un lundi. Le 12 mai 1997. Je venais de quitter la basilique de Mvoly\u00e9, \u00e0 la sortie sud de Yaound\u00e9, o\u00f9 j’avais assist\u00e9 \u00e0 la messe de 6 heures en compagnie de mon \u00e9pouse de l’\u00e9poque. Nous \u00e9tions \u00e0 huit jours de la f\u00eate nationale. Plong\u00e9e dans un semi-\u00e9tat d’urgence, la ville \u00e9tait en \u00e9bullition et les rues grouillaient d’hommes en armes venus en renfort des provinces. Pourtant, c’est l’esprit l\u00e9ger que je me dirigeais vers le nord de la ville.<\/p>\n

\u00c0 la t\u00eate d’un important consortium franco-camerounais charg\u00e9 de la construction d’axes routiers, je faisais partie des personnalit\u00e9s invit\u00e9es aux festivit\u00e9s : d\u00e9fil\u00e9 \u00e0 la tribune pr\u00e9sidentielle le matin, r\u00e9ception au Palais de l’unit\u00e9 en soir\u00e9e. Je m’en r\u00e9jouissais \u00e0 l’avance. J’ignorais alors que ce jour me marquerait \u00e0 jamais au fer rouge.<\/p>\n

Vers 7h 30, nous \u00e9tions presque parvenus \u00e0 destination lorsque les hurlements de sir\u00e8nes se firent de plus en plus stridents. Au lieu-dit Carrefour-Bastos, notre v\u00e9hicule fut subitement encercl\u00e9 par une centaine de voitures et de motos des forces de l’ordre.<\/p>\n

Des communications au talkie-walkie, inaudibles, fusaient de toutes parts. Mes sens \u00e9taient comme anesth\u00e9si\u00e9s. J’entendis n\u00e9anmoins une voix mena\u00e7ante \u00e9ructer : \u00ab\u00a0Les mains en l\u2019air !\u00a0\u00bb Avant l’annonce triomphale : \u00ab\u00a0L’oiseau est dans la cage !\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Quelques semaines plus t\u00f4t, des rumeurs faisant \u00e9tat d’une enqu\u00eate me concernant m’\u00e9taient parvenues. Je n’y avais accord\u00e9 aucune importance, ne voyant pas ce qui aurait pu les justifier. De plus, je n’avais pas re\u00e7u la moindre convocation de la police, encore moins de la justice. Je priai l’agent de laisser partir mon \u00e9pouse. \u00ab\u00a0Donnez-nous les armes ! O\u00f9 sont les armes ?\u00a0\u00bb vocif\u00e9ra-t-il.<\/p>\n

Puis, tandis que ses coll\u00e8gues fouillaient ma voiture, il m’en extirpa et me jeta sans m\u00e9nagement dans une Peugeot familiale banalis\u00e9e. Six molosses arm\u00e9s jusqu’aux dents m’encadraient. Leurs talkies walkies braillaient dans une indescriptible cacophonie. Je compris \u00e0 cet instant que toutes les forces de s\u00e9curit\u00e9 du pays, y compris la garde pr\u00e9sidentielle, s’\u00e9taient lanc\u00e9es \u00e0 mes trousses. \u00c0 pr\u00e9sent que j’\u00e9tais dans leurs filets, ils ne semblaient pas savoir ce qu’il fallait faire de moi.<\/p>\n

Alors, entre 7 h 45 et 11 h, toutes sir\u00e8nes hurlantes, ils me firent faire le tour de la ville plusieurs fois. Des journalistes me demandent parfois si j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 molest\u00e9. Question saugrenue. Mes ge\u00f4liers avaient le sentiment d’avoir r\u00e9alis\u00e9 la prise du si\u00e8cle : un horrible gangster, doubl\u00e9 d’un dangereux terroriste.<\/p>\n

Une nouvelle loi salutaire<\/p>\n

Conduit dans les locaux de la police judiciaire, je d\u00e9couvris ce que l’on semblait me reprocher : atteinte \u00e0 la s\u00e9curit\u00e9 int\u00e9rieure, gangst\u00e9risme d’\u00c9tat, d\u00e9tournement de 150 milliards de FCFA… S’ouvrit alors une p\u00e9riode de cinquante-deux jours de garde \u00e0 vue rythm\u00e9e par des navettes entre le r\u00e9duit des grands bandits que j’occupais et le bureau du directeur de la s\u00fbret\u00e9 pour des interrogatoires.<\/p>\n

J’\u00e9tais entr\u00e9 en enfer. La premi\u00e8re nuit, je m’interdis de dormir de peur de ne pas me r\u00e9veiller. Les douze premiers jours, je refusai de boire et de m’alimenter. Suivirent dix-neuf jours \u00e0 la prison centrale. Jug\u00e9 nuitamment et sans avocat le 4 octobre 1997, j’ai ensuite atterri dans un cachot de 7m\u00b2 aux sous-sols du secr\u00e9tariat d’\u00c9tat \u00e0 la D\u00e9fense, o\u00f9 je suis rest\u00e9 jusqu’\u00e0 ma lib\u00e9ration, en 2014.<\/p>\n

Cette histoire a tu\u00e9 ma m\u00e8re et paralys\u00e9 ma s\u0153ur. Elle a aussi permis l’adoption, en France, le 22 d\u00e9cembre dernier, d’une loi accordant des r\u00e9parations aux victimes fran\u00e7aises de d\u00e9tention arbitraire \u00e0 l’\u00e9tranger. J’ai au moins remport\u00e9 une premi\u00e8re victoire morale. \u00bb<\/p>\n
