Africa-Press<\/a> – Cameroun<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>In a dispatch, Monday, June 7, 2021, Human Rights Watch notes that it\u2019s already one week since prominent Cameroonian human rights lawyer, Amungwa Tanyi Nicodemus, was thrown behind bars on \u201cbogus charges of inciting terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe should be released immediately,\u201d said Human Rights Watch.<\/p>\n

According to the human rights organization, Gendarmes arrested Amungwa on May 31 at the Groupement Territorial de la Gendarmerie in Cameroon\u2019s capital, Yaound\u00e9, while he was assisting a client.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to Amungwa\u2019s lawyers, after Amungwa complained that Cameroon\u2019s criminal procedure had been breached in his client\u2019s case, the gendarme in charge of the investigation seized Amungwa\u2019s phone without a warrant, claiming Amungwa had taken photographs at the facility,\u201d said Human Rights Watch. \u201cWhile searching for the alleged photographs, the gendarme found other photographs that recorded alleged military abuses in Cameroon\u2019s Anglophone regions and arrested Amungwa, his lawyers said.\u201d<\/p>\n

It said Amungwa was transferred to the Service Central des Recherches Judiciaires (SCRJ), at the State Defense Secretariat (Secr\u00e9tariat d\u2019\u00c9tat \u00e0 la d\u00e9fense, SED) \u2013 a detention facility where Human Rights Watch has previously documented repeated resort to incommunicado detention and torture \u2013 where he remains detained.<\/p>\n

Monday\u2019s Human Rights Watch dispatch read: \u201cOn June 1, Amungwa\u2019s lawyers and the head of the Cameroon bar association visited him in detention and urged his release. Two days later, the Yaound\u00e9 military court prosecutor rejected Amungwa\u2019s lawyers\u2019 request for bail and returned the case to the SCRJ for \u201crelevant checks.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmungwa, a member of the Cameroon bar association, is one of the lawyers representing Sisiku Julius Ayuk Tabe, the jailed leader of the Cameroonian separatist group, the Ambazonia Interim Government, and several other people arrested in connection with the Anglophone crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmungwa\u2019s arrest is a direct attack on the legal profession,\u201d Ayukotang Ndep Nkongho, one of Amungwa\u2019s lawyers, told Human Rights Watch. \u201cHis arbitrary detention reveals a system geared towards stifling and undermining the role and activities of lawyers involved in key human rights cases.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAmungwa\u2019s detention takes place amidst a broader crackdown in Cameroon on opposition and dissent. He is one of dozens of government critics, human rights defenders, and journalists arrested in recent years,\u201d said Human Rights Watch. \u201cPossessing photographs that provide evidence of abuses in the English-speaking regions is not a crime, far less an act to incite terrorism.
